[Column] Boris Veldhuijzen van Zanten: Impatient patience

There’s a certain skill to pushing a stalled car. You can’t throw all your energy into it on one go. You need to grab the car, lean into it a bit, build up the pressure in your arms. Then, wait a second until you feel movement, then push a little bit more.

Strength is important, but there’s more to it than just brute force.

Kinda like any project you manage. You have to apply pressure, but also plan ahead and have patience.

I had a conversation with two people recently. One of them said I seemed impatient and then the other one said she disagreed, and that I always seemed very patient. I agreed with them both and tried to explain that I’m impatient but in a very patient way.

I don’t think I made much sense.

What I wanted to say is that I’m always pushing forward. I’m ambitious, but I also understand that things take time. I’m persistent and relentless, but I don’t get frustrated when I don’t get what I want right away. So when people say I seem impatient I agree, and when they say I seem patient I also agree.

I’m also very good at pushing a stalled car, so feel free to call me when that happens and you need help.
